Senior Food Box Program
Doing What’s Needed
Commodity Supplemental Food Program or Senior Food Box Program is a federal food program, designed to improve the health of senior citizens. Food for the program is provided by the USDA’s Agency of Food and Nutrition Service. Once a month, volunteers pack food boxes for senior citizens participating in the senior box distribution. Volunteers may also be needed to assist with deliveries to the senior box distribution sites around the county.
Charitable Milk Program
Tackling the Issue
Community Food Warehouse, in partnership with Feeding Pennsylvania, American Dairy Association Northeast and Pennsylvania Dairymen’s Association helped build the first statewide charitable fresh milk program in recent years. This program made it possible for food banks to offer this highly requested perishable commodity to food-insecure families and individuals that they could previously not supply. Approximately 1,800 half gallons of milk are distributed each month.
Temporary Food Assistance Program
The Temporary Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a Federal Program that helps supplement the diets of low-income Americans, including elderly people, by providing them with emergency food and nutrition at no cost. It provides food and administrative funds to States to supplement the diets of these groups. The state, in turn, allocates commodities to each county based on poverty level and unemployment rates. The CFWMC has been designated by the Mercer County Commissioners as the lead agency for this program. To ensure that all commodities are distributed to eligible residents of Mercer County, USDA establishes both program and eligibility criteria. A memorandum of understanding is signed between the CFWMC and eligible emergency food assistance pantries.
